Description

Symmetrical, 3-storey 6-bay. Dressed rubble cream sandstone with long and short stugged ashlar dressings. Segmental-headed openings to each bay of 1st and 2nd floors; larger at 1st floor. Timber sash and case windows; irregular sashes, windows with 20 panes at ground and 1st floor floor and 12 panes at 2nd floor. Piended roof; grey slates; S face replaced by corrugated-iron. At apex, pitch-roofed weatherboarded cap house with windows to N and S and ventilator course. This dignified building is empty and vandalised, although still seems watertight. There is a coal yard immediately to the S. The railway line, which came right up, was closed by Beeching. Note the Gasworks house immediately to the E with which this building was related. Development History
February 1998: The owners propose to demolish the building as part of extension plans. Local planners instead suggest its incorporation into the plans. December 1998: The granary is bought by the owners of the neighbouring land. December 2000: Scottish Borders Council offers grant aid towards limited repairs to the windows and roof. May 2004: External inspection reveals that the building sits within a working yard and may be in limited use.
March 2009: External inspection reveals that the building is in use, but is in poor condition. Many of the windows are smashed and in a decayed state, the stonework is in need of repointing and the timber boarded roof vent appears to be rotten.
16 May 2022: The listing of the building has been removed following a review by Historic Environment Scotland. Assessment determines the building no longer meets the criteria for listing. (Case ID Ref: 300046723)
5 September 2022: The local planning authority confirms that the building suffered the loss of the roof structure in a fire in July 2021. Condition moved to RUINOUS and risk moved to HIGH.
