Description

3x6 bay former corn mill of 3 storeys with attic. The mill is built of red brick with contrasting yellow brick dressings, each bay articulated by pilaster strips that rise into segmental arches at second floor level. Blind bullseyes sit in the gableheads of the side elevations, whilst 2 projecting covered hoists remain on each of the long elevations and rise through the attic level. The interior features a timber floor at both first and second floor level, supported by steel joists and iron columns on a 12x8' grid.

The granary was originally served by a siding from the nearby railway line. The former mill is noted as being one of the few remaining industrial buildings in Stirling dating from the early 20th century.

Development History
1986: Permissions are sought for the demolition of the mill to make way for a retail development car park. SCT objects, citing the mill as one of the last traces of an important historic local industry, and one of the few buildings of any architectural merit to survive in the immediate vicinity. The condition of the building is also remarkably good, and although unused the mill is wind and watertight. All walls remain sound and plumb, and there is no evidence of rot, although blocked guttering may have begun to cause some damp. October 1993: Planning Permission and Listed Building Consent are sought by new owners Arnold Clark Automobiles Ltd for the conversion of the mill into 12 dwellings, with an extension holding a stair tower. November 1995: The owners confirm that they continue to seek the conversion of the milll, and hope to start work within 12 months. However, later moves to sell the mill to Stirling Council for sheltered housing fall through due to problems over access. December 1998: External inspection reveals no works to have commenced and the mill remains redundant but secure. Listed Building Consent is being sought for its demolition. An engineer's report notes that the Fire Officer has expressed concern at the structural condition of the south west gable and at the stability of the cantilevered dormers. The gable has now developed a prominent crack, which, the report notes, could lead to brickwork failure in the future. Cracking has also affected the dormers. SCT objects, noting that a structural appraisal has not been undertaken and that alternative uses remain unconsidered. The Architectural Heritage Society of Scotland also objects. The application is subsequently refused. January 2000: No change to the fabric is reported. June 2005: Local planners report that they have been in recent discussion with Arnold Clark over possible re-uses for the builidng.
June 2004: Historic Scotland upgrade the category of listing of the building from C(S) to B.
June 2008: External inspection finds that, other than the ground floor, the building remains vacant. Decay of the upper floors appears to have been accelerated due to the condition of the roof. The windows are in very poor condition. The building sits within light industrial/ retail units.
23 July 2012: RCAHMS visit the site to conduct survey work to record the building. BARR is advised the upper floor was previously used to store paper files, but as the building is not watertight this has ceased. The ground floor is being used as storage space.
30 October 2014: A member of the public advises a hole has appeared in the roof of the building.
3 July 2015: A member of the public notes the hole to the roof and that the hoist bays appear to be braced.
9 July 2015: External inspection finds the roof has a very large hole to the northern itch and the whole roof is netted. The hoist bays are braced and there is much evidence of further deterioration.
22 September 2015: Local planners confirm a large section of the roof collapsed inwards. Condition moved to Very Poor and Risk to High.
13 December 2018: The site is being marketed for sale through appointed agent Shepherd Commercial, offers invited.
1 May 2019: Listed Building Consent for demolition of the building is being sought (19/00321/LBC).
17 February 2020: Listed Building Consent (19/00321/LBC) for demolition has been withdrawn.
3 February 2021: Listed Building Consent for repairs to render the building structurally safe has been conditionally approved (20/00870/LBC).
