Description

L shaped stables of random rubble construction flanking the courtyard of the Scot's Mining Company House.

The Scot's Mining Company House was built as the mine manager's house for Leadhills mining settlement 1734-6, at a time when William Adam was known to be working at Hopetoun House and may be the only surviving example of a small mansion house designed by him. The Hope family, founders of Hopetoun House, acquired the lands of Leadhills through marriage of Sir James Hope (1614-61) to daughter of Robert Foulis of Leadhills. The house later becaming a shooting lodge in the 19th century. (Historic Scotland)

Development History
October 2008: External inspection finds the stables block is in ruinous condition. It has been roofless for many years and currently houses a temporary stable. The wall is still largely intact but the pointing is poor throughout. The north-east corner has collapsed. The stonework around the window is in urgent need of repair. The Scots Mining Company House Trust is commited to developing the grounds, including the stable block -potentially as a resource or exhibition centre - to build capacity within the community and attract more visitors to Leadhills.
4 June 2013: External inspection finds no significant change from the previous site visit.
6 July 2018: The overall address has been re-assessed for listed status. The house and garden walls retain their A-listed status, the stables block has been excluded from listed status. Record updated to reflect the stables as an unlisted building within a conservation area.
