Development History
31 October 2013: External inspection finds an imposing building, upper floors latterly in use as a backpackers hostel, now fire damaged. Water damage to stonework is evident with the balustrade overgrown with vegetation. The roof is largely lost due to fire damage. The Inverness Courier reported (3/4/2013) on the fire at the backpackers hostel in April 2013. Highland Council served a Section 29 Dangerous Building Notice on the fire damaged building in May 2013 ref: 13/00010/DS.
12 February 2015: STV News website reports (11/2/2015) Highland Council has served a Dangerous Building Notice on the owners of the building, following a recent structural survey of the property, to expedite repairs and reduce risk to the public.
2 February 2017: Conservation Area Consent for works to reinstate the external
fabric of the property is being sought ref: 16/05686/CON.
fabric of the property is being sought ref: 16/05686/CON.

10 September 2018: Consent for the demolition and rebuild, as noted previously, has been conditionally approved.
5 March 2019: A member of the public notes scaffolding has been erected and road closures are in effect whilst works are carried out. Moved to Demolished.
18 December 2019: External inspection finds the building extant - not cleared as previously noted. Works have been carried out, however, presumably to make the building safe - chimneys removed, front wallhead capped, building supported with propping and all openings are sealed. Returned to At Risk.
8 June 2021: Interior completely removed, only shared gable walls and front façade standing. 18/01633/CON - Application for demolition of a building in a conservation area approved August 2018 (valid until August 2023).
18/05059/FUL - Planning application for the down taking and reinstatement of frontage and change to design of rear elevation with change of use from hostel to two houses on first and second floor and from takeaway to one retail shop in ground floor conditionally granted February 2019 (valid until February 2022).
