Description
1875 origins as entertainment venue, largely rebuit Neil C Duff, 1927 as Waldorf Palais Dance hall and converted C J McNair, 1929 to cinema. Early 21st century converted to bar and music venue. 3-storey 8-bay (left bay added early 21st century) classical building with round-arched arcaded top storey and dominant full height Classical Modern entrance by McNair. Painted smooth render. Cornice divides 1st and 2nd storey. Angle pilasters.
The ABC has a complex history however its various changes have resulted in a striking and unusual streetscape elevation which is an important feature of one of Glasgow's principal streets. The imposing full-height entrance, designed by C J McNair, one of Scotland's celebrated cinema architects, is typical of cinema design and was purposefully designed to advertise its presence and draw patrons into the building. (Historic Environment Scotland List Entry)

Development History
February 2019: Nominated for the Register by a member of the public as listed building consent for demolition is being sought (19/00266/LBA). The building was severely damaged by fire in 2018. Alert to monitor for progress of LBC application.
12 November 2019: Revised application for Listed Building Consent for demolition is being sought 19/00266/LBC.
28 February 2023: Member of the public has nominated the site noting the fire damage and associated roof collapse. The application for demolition remains pending consideration (19/00266/LBA).
24 August 2023: External inspection finds the former cinema, latterly a music venue, remains in fire-damaged condition. The roof was lost in the fire, some of the supporting structure remains but is buckled. Internal propping has been installed and is evident to the front and Scott Street elevations. Walls are relatively plumb but the peeling painted finish suggested dampness is a growing issue. Vegetation is beginning to establish to the parapet and buddleia is growing along the Scott Street elevation. Some windows and boarded up, others intact to the front, to the Scott Street elevation fire-damaged buckled frames are intact but glazings are lost. Listed Building Consent for demolition (19/00266/LBA) remains under consideration. Move to At Risk.
