General Details and Location

Description

Small gabled lodge at the entrance to the now demolished Castlehill House. The lodge is in coursed rubble and slate with deep bracketed eaves and ashlar quoins. A canted bay window sits to the right of the entrance.

Development History

December 1991: External inspection reveals the lodge to be empty and boarded up. Slates are now falling from the roof. March 1997: The owner reports that he has spent considerable sums maintaining the lodge but that it has fallen prey to vandalism. February 2000: Local planners are unaware of any change. April 2003: External inspection reveals no apparent change to the building fabric.

October 2008: The lodge house is referenced in the Caithness Redundant Buildings Inventory, part of the North Highland Initiative.

6 April 2012: A member of the public advises that the property is currently being marketed for sale through agents Drever and Heddle at offers over £40,000.

6 June 2012: A member of the public advises that the property has been withdrawn from sale.

13 December 2012: The Buildings at Risk Service is contacted by the owners of the property who advise they have attempted to commence restoration works but have had repeated theft of building materials from the site.

26 September 2013: External inspection finds the lodge has continued to deteriorate and is now in a very poor condition with many holes in the roof, damaged windows and doors. From what could be seen from the exterior, the interior has been stripped.

23 May 2018: External inspection finds the roof continues to deteriorate - holes enlarging. Walls are damp in places but appear relatively plumb. Windows are boarded up and doors blocked up. The boundary wall has lost sections of masonry.

27 August 2018: A member of the public notes a social media page with information on the restoration of lodge. The roof is currently being replaced. Moved to Restoration in Progress.

10 October 2022: A member of the public notes the site is under marketing for sale. Yvonne Fitzgerald Properties, Thurso is marketing the former lodge for sale, offers over £120,000 are being sought.
Photographs within the marketing particulars show external repairs have been completed, notably to roofs. Condition moved from Very Poor to Poor. Moved back to At Risk.

12 January 2023: Property remains under marketing for sale.

5 February 2024: Property remains under marketing for sale.

4 July 2024: The property is no longer being marketed for sale.
