Development History
July 2002: SCT understands the house has been vacant since 1970, having previously served as day patients' accommodation for Stratheden Hospital. Local planners report that there is evidence of a severe outbreak of dry rot throughout the structural timbers, including the roof and floors. The property is now in a dangerous condition and all openings have been boarded up. There is some graffiti on the external walls. June 2005: External inspection reveals that the property remains at risk. September 2007: External inspection reveals the rainwater goods are blocked and defective which increases the liklihood of rainwater ingress and rot conditions. The building is secured but in a secluded area open to public access and as such in vulnerable to vandalism. The property is in need of urgent maintenance and repair to ensure it is wind and water tight. December 2007: Fife Council are seeking expressions of interest to take forward a development brief for Silverburn Park Estate.
February 2009: East Fife Mail reports that Fife Council have approved offering the Silverburn House, the former Flax Mill and Corriemar, on a long leasehold basis. The council is hoping to attract private investment to turn the properties into businesses which will offer new recreational opportunities for local people and tourists. Fife Council are inviting indications of interest and are ready to have detailed discussions with interested parties, before they ask for formal offers to be submitted.
November 2010: External inspection finds the building has deteriorated significantly; the roof is now in very poor condition and the entire building is now fenced off.
October 2011: GVA advise they have been appointed agents to collate all interest in the buildings and land within the park on a long leasehold basis.
31 July 2014: External inspection finds the building's condition remains much as seen previously.
8 December 2014: The Levenmouth Area Cttee were presented with a long term business plan for the redevelopment of the park - to include maintaining and improving the woodlands and gardens along with the restoration of the mill - though Fife Employment Access Trust (FEAT) in May 2014. FEAT propose to demonstrate they can generate income from park activities to achieve financial viability over a two year period as well as securing funding towards the restoration of the mill. Fife Council and FEAT have proposed a gradual hand-over for the future management of the park. The lease to FEAT is not currently proposed to include Silverburn House or Corriemar.
24 April 2019: External inspection reveals no significant change from previous visit. Gradual decline continues. Site remains fenced off.
2 December 2021: The Courier reports (23/06/2021) that Fife Employment Access Trust have taken over renovation of Silverburn Park. The articles notes that £30,000 has already been raised and plans include renovation of the former flax mill into a community hub.
7 January 2022: The Courier reports (05/01/2022) that Silverburn Park owner is aiming to open the visitor centre and backpackers' hostel by 2026. The delivery phase of the project is due to commence in March, with a goal of appointing a contractor by March 2023 with construction beginning the following month. The article goes on to report on the current condition of the park, with green spaces having been transformed for public use and the addition of a new campsite with glamping pods.
2 May 2024: Desk-based assessment suggests the building remains At-Risk.
