Description

Single storey, U-plan stable block with octagonal Scottish 17th century style, tower sited on loch shore and linked to stables by sandstone balustrade. Stugged, squared and snecked sandstone with polished sandstone margins and dressings. Base course; chamfered reveals; crowstepped gables; eaves band; pedimented dormerheads with ball finials.

The stables and tower were part of the Ardenvohr estate, home of the Muir family. Ardenvohr House, is now the Royal Northern Yacht Club. The stables are shown on the 1st edition map of 1858 but the tower does not appear on this map; it is shown on the 2nd edition map of 1896-7. On the 2nd edition map the stables seem to have had a S range added but this is no longer extant. (Historic Scotland)

August 1993: The owner reports that he is slowly restoring the building for his own use. September 1999: The roof is destroyed by fire. June 2001: External inspection reveals no change. 13 May 2004: The Helensburgh Advertiser reports on the building's inclusion on the Buildings at Risk Register. May 2006: The local planners report that they inspected the property from the road and that signs of some activity was present. November 2007: External inspection reveals the property is vacant and roofless. Security fences are in place, as is some scaffolding.
September 2009: External inspection finds the building in a ruinous state. Though the external walls still seem sound, almost everything else appears to have been lost.
25 October 2012: External inspection finds no significant change from the previous site visit.
