Description

Former blanket mill of roughly coursed stone, part of an L-plan group which includes a mill manager's house and chimney at the north end. The range to the south of the mill features a lintel inscribed "HKAB 1743" and also retains some interesting glazing patterns, each window being divided into narrow vertical strips containing small overlapping panes of glass. The riverside gable retains its original lift hoist, whilst the opposite gable retains the bell that once summoned mill workers.

Development History
July 1990: External inspection reveals the mill to be uninhabited. The roof is now leaking and the first floor rotten, with many windows missing. Permission is sought for a change of use to residential. SCT supports the principle of residential use, but expresses concern at some of the proposed designs. July 1993: Consent is granted for the provision of 1 dwelling in the mill. October 1993: The mill is marketed for sale. July 1994: Permission is sought for conversion into 9 dwellings. SCT welcomes the application in principle, but expresses concern over some treatments. The Architectural Heritage Society of Scotland objects. It is proposed to remove the original lift hoist from the riverside gable, along with the bell that once summoned mill workers. The mill manager's house at the north end would lose its chimney due to a 2 storey addition. May 1995: An amended application is submitted, with 7 new houses erected on surrounding ground. It is proposed to demolish some of the existing buildings. SCT opposes demolition, and advances the extension of the mill as an alternative to new-build. The Architectural Heritage Society of Scotland also objects. April 1996: Consent is given for part demolition and the erection of 7 houses, though this consent is never exercised. August 2001: The Cockburn Conservation Trust reports that the owners are exploring grant options. February 2004: SCT receives reports that some re-roofing has taken place with attic dormers installed. The mill appears to be in the process of restoration.
May 2009: External inspection reveals that the south range of the mill has been restored for residential use. However, the adjoining north range and Manager‘s House remain in a derelict condition. Set back to AT RISK (with exception of south range).
August 2011: External inspection finds no significant change from the previous site visit.
