Development History
June 2006: A planning application is lodged for the demolition of the school to make way for a care home. SCT objects on the grounds that the school is capable of conversion.
September 2007: The Cumbernauld News reports on the lack of security for the empty school building and that it has been used for under-age drinking. The article goes on to note that the interior of the school has been vandalised.
February 2008: External inspection reveals the building appears to be (externally) in fair condition. The windows are boarded over. The more modern extensions have been demolished to make way for a new childrens care home.
14 February 2008: The Cumbernauld News website reports on how the building has been recently used for anti-social purposes.
14 October 2009: The Cumbernauld News runs a letter from a member of the Cumbernauld Village Community Council. In it they highlight frustration at slow progress being made with school building.
May 2010: External inspection reveals that the building remains derelict. All windows are boarded up. The roof is starting to deteriorate with lost slates and broken rooflights. The rainwater goods are in need of maintenance and repair. Some sections of gutter are disconnected. Plants are taking hold in the courtyard. The east gable of the rear block has been damaged during the demolition of an extension.
July 2010: The Kilsyth Chronicle reports that a design brief is being drafted to potentially restore the former school into a community facility. Grant funding assistance has been secured through the Cumbernauld Village Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme.
6 June 2012: The Cumbernault House Trust reports they are working jointly with Cumbernauld Village Action for the Community (CVAC) to bring a much-needed, sustainable community facility to Cumbernauld by developing plans to convert the former Cumbernauld Village Primary School building into a multi-purpose community and heritage hub. Initial plans are for the facility to house multi-purpose event space, a shared service centre for local groups and charities, with a visitors centre to celebrate the history of both old Cumbernauld and the new town, while providing a positive introduction to Cumbernauld. The Trust has been successful in obtaining £15,000 of funding, with £10,000 granted by the Big Lottery Fund, and £5,000 from Historic Scotland, for two feasibility studies, carried out by Jura Consultants and Malcolm Fraser Architects. The Trust has secured the building with a written agreement from North Lanarkshire Council to release it to them, with the Council keen to see the building put to a positive use.
11 November 2014: External inspection finds the building remains in much the same condition as seen previously.
4 August 2015: Cumbernauld Community Development Trust had hoped to pursue the restoration and conversion of the site into a community and heritage hub, however the group is understood to have withdrawn from the project in September 2014 following difficulties securing support towards the £3 million project. North Lanarkshire Council is now marketing the building for sale.
1 March 2018: The property remains under marketing for sale by North Lanarkshire Council.
22 January 2020: Full Planning Permission and Conservation Area Consent for substantial demolition and redevelopment of the site to form a nursery have been conditionally approved (ref: 19/01484/FUL & 19/01485/CAC).
16 March 2022: Planning permission (21/00685/FUL) and Conservation Area Consent (21/00684/CAC) conditionally granted for demolition of remaining school building for 8 unit flatted development.
