Description
Tall Renaissance palazzo, built for Elgin Club. 2-storey, 4-bay; ashlar, channelled at ground floor, rusticated quoins at 1st; rubble flanks. Door with moulded architraves and console bracketted cornice in right hand bay, 3 keystoned windows to left. Tall round-headed windows 1st floor in aedicules with blind balustrades; 4-pane glazing. Cill course, frieze and deep mullioned cornice; die parapet originally surmounted by 5 urns. 2 later swept dormers; coped end stacks; slate roof. Datestone over door reads: Inst. 1864 EC 1869. Development History
June 2008: External inspection finds the building in fair condition but at risk from redundancy of use. LBC and planning permission has been lodged to alter and extend building to form entertainment venue with restaurant bars nightclub and boutique hotel rooms. Ref: 08/01545/LBC
July 2008: The Northern Scot reports of the plans to regenerate the building as an entertainment venue. The article notes that a previously application to convert the building into a casino were approved but had to be revisited as Moray did not apply for a casino license.
August 2008: The Scottish Licensed Trade News repeats the story that the venue is to be converted to a luxury leisure facility.
September 2008: SCT is advised that a heritage impact assessment is being prepared for the building as part of the planning application for the Club.
August 2009: The Northern Scot reports that plans have been approved by the Moray Council for redevelopment of the site as a hotel and leisure complex.
October 2009: Dram magazine repeats the story that planning permission has been gained for the redevelopment.
September 2011: Scottish Civic Trust reports the building remains at risk.
12 July 2012: External inspection finds no significant change from the previous site visit.
14 July 2015: External inspection finds the building remains disused and in deteriorating condition. Condition moved to Poor.
10 May 2023: A member of the public notes an article in the Press and Journal (Jan 2023) reported Moray Council's bid to the UK Government Levelling Up Fund for the regeneration of Elgin, was unsuccessful. The bid included a proposal to convert the former Elgin Club into a hotel.
11 July 2024: The Press and Journal report (18/06/2024) that the property is now being marketed for sale.
27 August 2024: Marketing details removed.
