Description
Long rectangular 2-storey cornmill on sloping site with long elevations E and W and with approach ramp at S gable giving access to loft. Harl pointed rubble, tooled rubble dressings. Overshot millwheel at E elevation served by raised lade. Various doorways and windows in long W elevation and small single storey lean-to extension. Tall octagonal ridge kiln vent; slate roof. All machinery complete and in reasonable working order; 2 sets of millstones, 1 pair dating from circa 1898.
A mill is indicated at East Grange in circa 1590 on map drawn by Rev Timothy Pont; there may have been an even earlier one serving the medieval Cistercian Abbey at Kinloss, East Grange then being part of the abbey lands. The present building may incorporate fabric of the mill known to have been standing in 1746. East Grange mill ceased full-time working in 1975-6 due to the retirement of the miller but continues in partial farm use for bruising cattle feed. (Historic Scotland)

Development History
February 2009: External inspection finds the building vacant and disused. There is evidence of sagging affecting part of the roof. The mill wheel is overgrown with vegetation.
April 2010: A member of the public advises the current owners are thought to be due to commence restoration.
16 August 2012: External inspection finds works well underway on site. Much of the roof has been replaced and ventilator under reconstruction at time of visit. Walls have been re-pointed. Moved to Restoration in Progress.
14 July 2015: External inspection finds restoration works have ceased and the building remains disused. Moved back to At Risk.
4 March 2024: Desk-based assessment suggests the wider site is in use as holiday accommodation and events space. It is unclear whether further works have been undertaken to the former mill.
