Development History
May 2009: External inspection suggests that the mill is at least partially vacant. A notice affixed to the building warns of falling masonry and some of the glazing is broken. RCAHMS reported that the mill was disused in 1999.
July 2011: External inspection finds no significant change from the previous site visit. Applications for partial demolition and conversion to form 10 dwellings was lodged, but withdrawn ref: 05/01603/COU & 05/01603/COU.
10 November 2011: External inspection finds the mill continues to deteriorate. The number of slipped slates is increasing and small holes, exposing sarking, are beginning to appear on the roof. A single storey building abutting the western gable has a collapsed roof. Risk level raised to Moderate.
13 December 2018: The Southern Reporter notes (12/12/2018) on the appointment of architects Aitken Turnbull to undertake an options appraisal for the former mill, as part of the wider Hawick action plan.
17 November 2022: Planning permission is currently being sought for demolition (ref:22/00728/CON). Supporting documentation states that the condition of the building has deteriorated and the Scottish Borders Council erected internal and external structural scaffolding in 2021 due to safety concerns. The building is not within the scope of the current (2019-2025) Hawick Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme. Risk moved to HIGH and condition moved to VERY POOR.
9 January 2023: Conservation Area consent (22/00728/CON) has been granted for the demolition of the building. Risk moved to CRITICAL.
