Description

One of a row of 7 single storey, 3- and 4-bay cottages with corrugated iron roofs; No. 86 is thatched. Random rubble with sandstone ashlar window margins. Predominantly timber-boarded front doors and 4-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. Short stone stacks with clay cans.

An unusually long and unaltered row of traditional cottages. The corrugated-iron roofs give the row a particularly striking and picturesque appearance. The lack of later rooflights and dormers not only on the front, but also the back elevations is remarkable, and very few rear extensions have been added since the early 20th century. All the cottages would have originally been thatched; the thatch on No 86 was replaced in the early 1990s (Historic Scotland).

Development History
October 2010: Local planners bring the building to the attention of SCT. A local resident has been concerned about its condition. The property may no longer be wind and water tight. There is a possibility thatch has survived underneath the corrugated iron roof covering. It is thought to have vacant for some years. Local authority attempting to contact owners, but have yet to locate them. For Investigation.
20 February 2014: External inspection finds the cottage remains disused and has broken glazing to the door. The tin roof is probably covering thatch. Moved to At Risk.
5 August 2020: Full Planning Permission and Listed Building Consent for alterations, extension and re-instatement of thatched roof are being sought (P/20/0959 & 60).
