Description

Single storey, 6-bay rectangular-plan stable block with single storey additions at rear. Squared and snecked tooled cream sandstone to front; harl-pointed rubble to sides and rear; sandstone ashlar dressings; brick-built rear additions. Prominent quoins; long and short surrounds to openings; projecting cills. Predominantly 4-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows; small rooflights. Grey slate piended roofs; central ridge ventilator. Brick-built stack; single can.

Originally, but no longer associated with the nearby Whitehall House - see separate list entry. The fact that something is shown on site in 1862 may indicate that the stables were rebuilt in 1896, possibly incorporating a previous structure. Still in use, there remain some good details, both inside and out. (Historic Scotland)

Development History
September 2011: External inspection finds the building under used and with maintenance needs to the roof - the ridge ventilator is very rusted, some tiles are slipped, rainwater goods are rusted with vegetation growth in gutters. The timber elements require maintenance. Full planning permission and listed building consent are being sought for change of use, alteration and addition, for conversion to residential use ref: 09/01103/FUL & 09/01102/LBC.
14 November 2012: BARR is contacted by the agent of the owner of the stables advising of the intention to repair the building to bring it back into use as stabling. Discussions on the extent of repair have commenced with Scottish Borders Council. It is the intention to start repairs works over the coming months.
3 April 2013: The agent for the owner advises restoration works, to bring the stables back into their original use, is well underway. Moved to Restoration in Progress.
