Development History
6 August 2013: Nominated by a member of the public for the Register as disused since 2007, when the building was sold by Dumfries & Galloway Council to a private developer. Building in worsening state of disrepair, with broken windows, nesting seagulls, blocked gutters, and vegetation growth on roof and in stonework. Water penetration is evident. Partially surrounded by safety fencing. For Investigation.
7 May 2014: External inspection finds this former school building, latterly in use as a school of art, sharing a site with other buildings in use. The overall condition is fair - the roof of the complex is notably complex and valled gutters are of concern and roof ventilators are missing in part. Rainwater goods are rusting and leaking, gutters are also of concern. Walls appear to be damp in places where water goods are failing, with plants establishing themselves. Some shrub growth is evident to chimneys. Ground floor windows are boarded up. Moved to At Risk.
28 October 2014: BBC News website noted (28/5/2014) a former bowling club had been selected by Dumfries and Galloway Councillors as their preferred site for the creation of a new learning hub. The article goes on to note other buildings in Dumfries were considered during the selection process, including the former George Street School of Art.
21 February 2018: BARR is advised Colliers International is now marketing the site for sale, price on application to the agents.
23 November 2018: The site is under marketing for sale through auction, at Future Property Auctions, with consent for conversion to form flats. A guide price of £70,000 has been set. Full Planning Permission for conversion to 9 flats was conditionally approved subject to a legal agreement Feb 2017 ref: 16/P/3/0060.
2 August 2024: Full planning permission (ref:23/0577/FUL) is being sought for alterations and change of use of former art school to form 14 flatted dwellings.
