Development History
18 January 2021: Nominated by a member of the public. For Investigation.
28 April 2021: External inspection finds roof, chimneys, rainwater goods and walls in need of maintenance. A few broken window panes but not serious, with wire grills for security at ground floor, some boarded up to rear but all in need of maintenance. Doors appear secure. Boundaries are well fenced and with security. In 2007 Edinburgh Council approved the rebuilding of school and sale of school site to Heart of Midlothian Football Club. A demolition application for the building was later lodged but refused. The former school is understood to have been disused since January 2010 when the replacement new build school opened. A proposal of application notice for development of the building, with new build, and conversion to form student accommodation (21/00988/PAN) has been submitted.
26 August 2021: Urban Realm reports (23/08/2021) on proposals for the re-use of the former school site. A new build development of student accommodation within the former school grounds is being progressed with the old school suggested as an amenity hub and community garden for local charitable bodies.
16 September 2021: Listed building consent (21/04468/LBC) and planning permission (21/04469/FUL) are being sought for partial demolition, change of use and new build to form student residential development and community facilities with associated infrastructure, landscaping and access
1 February 2023: The Scottish Government Planning and Environmental Appeals Division website reports that a Listed Building Consent (21/04468/LBC) appeal and Planning Permission (21/04469/FUL) appeal have been successful, and conditional planning permission has been granted for selective demolitions to enable the adaptation of the original school building, and new build, to create a student residential development and community facilities.
10 January 2024: A member of the public advices works are now underway.
