Description

2 symmetrical 2-storey blocks behind high W boundary wall, around courtyard enclosed by brick wall to E; door and window to ground floor, 2 windows to 1st floor facing courtyard on each block; single storey brick lean-tos to E. Windows timber sash and case, 12-pane, roofs piended in graded scottish slate. High boundary wall to W in random rubble with ashlar cope; depressed arch with impost blocks and raised margins gives access to stable courtyard, flanked to left by pedestrian doorway; single small window to upper level of southmost stable block. All doors and window shuttered in plain timber boarding.

The extensions of the late 18th century were built for Fowler the brewer of Prestonpans. There is evidence that earlier window and door openings would be found under the current harling. (Historic Scotland)

Development History
June 2008: External inspection finds the roofs of the north stable to be in very poor condition; slates are missing and there are holes in the roofing felt. There is a large crack in the south stable wall.
May 2011: External inspection finds no significant change to the south block of the stables since the last site visit. The roof condition to the north block however has deteriorated considerably and is now approaching a ruinous condition.
September 2011: Local planners advise East Lothian Council is working with the current owner/ occupier of the building.
7 January 2015: External inspection finds the buildings remain in much the same condition as seen previously.
18 February 2020: Listed Building Consent for alterations was submitted then withdrawn in December 2015 (ref: 15/00820/ELL). Listed Building Consent for alterations to building (including stables (BARR ref: 3496)) (retrospective) was granted subject to conditions on 13 June 2016 (ref: 16/00211/ELL). Consent sought in retrospect due to urgency of required repairs.
23 May 2022: East Lothian Courier reports on a fire at the house on 22 May. It is unclear whether the damage has extended to the stables.
16 May 2023: Local planners report solicitors continue to work on the confirmation of the estate, following the death of the last owner.
