Description

18th century smithy with 2 later smithy houses with later alterations in prominent continuous row, at bend in road. Rubble with squared stone dressings and harl pointing, cement repairs to openings of smithy houses. Smithy houses set back slightly from smithy. 2-storey with 1st floor breaking eaves, 4-bay. Fanlit, boarded doors with relieving arches over in bays to centre with windows to outer bays and gabled dormerheads breaking eaves above outer bays and between those to centre, outer dormerheads with stone coping. Blank return gable. Openings to rear. 12-pane and 4-pane sash and case windows. Stone coping to skews and harled stacks. Grey slates.

Fronting Peaston Steading, opposite now ruinous former bothy houses and the Grieve's house . A good example of East Lothian vernacular (Historic Scotland)

Development History
May 2011: External inspection finds the cottage vacant and in poor condition sited on alongside a double bend on a busy road. There are some broken and missing slates, vegetation in gutters and missing downpipes. Dropped window sashes with broken glazing.
5 February 2013: A member of the public advises the building remains at risk and is deteriorating.
23 August 2013: A member of the public advises that following a roof collapse the building has been fenced off.
4 December 2014: External inspection finds the building remains in much the same condition as seen previously. The roof collapse noted previously has occurred at the smithy.
